A Tale Of Two Benches

Even under the current difficult circumstances nothing is impossible!

When a client that met us by chance at Brownes Garden Centre last year contacted us with a special request we were both pleased and thankful to help.

The Challenge

Our client's brief was very specific which was great as it focused our energies...

"I would like you to provide me with two Heavy Traditional Curved Slat Back Garden Benches in a style the same as or else similar to the example shown on your website. The benches should be identical, 1.5m long and fully slated with quality reclaimed wood. The ornate cast iron frames should be finished in black and the slats oiled/vanished to an oak orange colour. I attach a picture of my recently constructed oak framed conservatory to assist you with the colour."

A simple enough challenge you would think, but under 'Lockdown' in full swing we found that materials from our local suppliers were either in short supply or in the case of Whiting's in Wells totally unavailable. We therefore started our search on the internet and were pleased to find replacements even if they were at a greater cost. The second challenge was the timber itself as our stock of reclaimed materials did not have enough to supply the twenty four 1.5m hardwood slats that were required. Fortunately we discovered that Timbersource Ltd based not far away in Shepton Mallet could easily and quickly meet our requirements with a wonderful consignment of sustainably forested West African Iroko hardwood. With all the problems now solved we set to work.

The Results

With the addition of bespoke handmade steel straps on the back and underneath and 3 reclaimed Indonesian teak on each bench with new fixing bolts and black washers the benches were completed and delivered to the client in a safe socially distanced manner.

What The Client Said...

"A great looking pair of garden benches made to specification for my garden by Wayne. They are very well constructed using mostly reclaimed materials and will last for many years. Tukosawa delivered the benches on time and were a pleasure to deal with."
